The Managing Director of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Mr. Usman Gur Mohammed has described the 2 x 60MVA, 132/33kV substation under construction at Ekim in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state as the best in the country.

Mohammed spoke during a recent facility tour of the substation at Ekim where he lauded TCN’s collaboration with Akwa Ibom State Government. “We have collaborated with Kaduna, Enugu and Delta states, this (Akwa Ibom) is the best we have had” he said.

Speaking further the TCN MD said “this collaboration is different from others because Akwa Ibom state Government is taking a bigger responsibility than the other states. This is the type of collaboration we want other states to emulate to provide electricity for their people”.

“The standard of civil work done here is the best in the country. I appreciate the Governor, Udom Emmanuel for the wonderful work he is doing for his people. Since Akwa Ibom state Government agreed to work with us they have removed the Right-of-Way, they have done the civil work even parts of the electromechanical work here was done by the state government” he said.

Mr. Mohammed however, expressed concerns that the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) was yet to begin work at their own end of operation to ensure that the power to be made available at Ekim substation is distributed to Akwa Ibom people.

He said “this substation is being built in the franchise of Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, if you look at this work now it is more than 80% complete, at this time we are supposed to have seen Port Harcourt Disco radiating their Feeders, they have not radiated. Port Harcourt disco needs to start preparing to take this load”.

The Managing Director of Ibom Power Company Limited, Engr. Meyen Etukudo who doubles as the Governor’s Aide on power said Ekim substation will provide steady and quality 24hrs power supply to Onna, Ikot Abasi, Mkpat Enin, Eastern Obolo and Orukanam. He added that the substation will supply power to Akwa Ibom State University and the neighbouring industries such as the Syringe factory, Flour Mills, Coconut Refinery and the Metering Company.

Ekim 2 x 60MVA, 132/33kV transmission substation is collaboration between Akwa Ibom State Government and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) which owns and operates the electricity transmission network system in Nigeria.
