At least two thousand Akwa Ibom women from Mkpat Enin Local Government Area (LGA) have benefited from the community-feeding programme initiated by the wife of Akwa Ibom state Governor, Martha Udom Emmanuel.
Twenty women selected from the eighty-seven villages that comprise Mkpat Enin received food items, clothes and money courtesy of the community-feeding programme. The programme previously held at Onna and Orukanam local government areas.
Speaking at the Government secondary school, Ukam where the items were distributed, Mrs Martha Udom Emmanuel said, “There are people who wake up with a desire to eat food but do not have food or even know where to find the food to eat”.
She said, “Udom Emmanuel’s intervention through the community-feeding programme has put food on the table of these people”. The Governor’s wife said Mkpat Enin is the third local government in the state to benefit from the community-feeding programme that would spread across the thirty-one local government areas in Akwa Ibom State.
The Vice Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University, Professor Eno Ibanga lauded the community-feeding programme and called on Mkpat Enin people to support Udom Emmanuel’s re-election. He said one of the first projects Udom Emmanuel did, as a Governor was the construction of the road leading into Mkpat Enin LGA.
He said Mkpat Enin stands to gain more from the siting of the state owned varsity in its environs. “Recruitment of engineers to work at Ekim power substation would favour indigenes of the Mkpat Enin as well as students of the state university”.
The Managing Director of Ibom Power Company Limited and Special Assistant (SA) on Power to the Governor, Engr. Meyen Etukudo said he was elated that the community-feeding programme of the governor’s wife has come to his own local government.
“Community-feeding programme is an initiative of the Governor’s wife led by the Chief Protocol to the Governor, Edmong Ufang to feed two thousand women across the eighty-seven villages, fourteen wards and the four clans that comprise Mkpat Enin”.
The Governor’s Aide on Power said, “Very soon, before this year runs out, Governor Udom Emmanuel and his wife would visit Mkpat Enin again to commission the 132/33kV, 2 x 60MVA substation at Ekim. He added that the substation would provide steady 24hours power supply to Mkpat Enin, Onna, Orukanam, Eastern Obolo and Ikot Abasi local government areas.
Comfort Ndiana-obot one of the beneficiaries appreciated the governor’s wife for the initiative. She said, “We the old women that can no longer be in gainful employment have received food items, money and clothes from the governor’s wife. We are very grateful to the Governor and his wife”.
