All is now set for light to shine in Ikot Abasi local government area of Akwa Ibom State after there was a hiatus in power supply to the community. Ibom Power Company limited has taken delivery of a 30MVA transformer with the capacity to evacuate 24megawatts (mw) of electricity to energize Ikot Abasi communities with an overall power consumption estimated at 6 to 10mw.

Engr. Etido Inyang, Chairman Ibom Power Board of Directors

The Chairman of Ibom Power Board of Directors Engr. Etido Inyang who spoke on the development said the arrival of the transformer meant solely for power supply to Ikot Abasi communities is a fulfilment of the promise made by Governor Udom Emmanuel to Ikot Abasi people.

He said the Governor’s promise was reiterated in the series of meetings held between Ibom Power Company and stakeholders in Ikot Abasi. “The number one goal is the restoration of power supply to Ikot Abasi. We have taken delivery of this 30MVA transformer which will energize the whole of Ikot Abasi. We will deal with the technical aspects of installations and line stringing. In less than no time power supply would be restored to Ikot Abasi as Governor Udom Emmanuel had promised.

The Managing Director of Ibom Power Company limited, Engr. Meyen Etukudo who spoke concerning the project disclosed that Ikot Abasi had previously been energized at the aegis of Ibom power through Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution (PHEDC), the disco serving the region. He said the community was disconnected from public power supply due to dispute between the community and PHEDC regarding outstanding electricity bills.

Explaining further, the Governor’s aide said “Udom Emmanuel first intervened by offsetting N13million from the outstanding electricity bills owed by the community to PHEDC. After the Governor’s intervention, PHEDC restored power supply to the community but the community refused and instead clamour for power supply from Ibom power plant, stationed in the community”.

“In response to the request of the community, Governor Udom Emmanuel gave approval that Ibom power plant should supply power to Ikot Abasi. The Governor thereafter secured the release of the 30MVA transformer from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The arrival of this transformer in Ikot Abasi community means quality and steady power supply will be available in Ikot Abasi before the end of the year”, the MD explained.

He concluded that the 30MVA transformer which has a capacity of 24mw will cater for the electricity load demand of Ikot Abasi estimated at 6 to 10mw and will also accommodate suppressed loads from other parts of the community.
